Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean form of unarmed self-defense. The name can be translated to Tae = foot, Kwon = fist and Do = the way.

Loosely translated it can mean “the way of the foot and the fist”. Beside the physical training, Taekwondo also puts a lot emphasis on the mental training, such as respect, discipline and managing aggression.

During training there is a distinction between the following components: techniques, style forms, sparring, break tests and self-defense.

A Taekwondo practitioner views Taekwondo as more than simply a sport. It is a way of life and is thus also applied as a way of thinking.

Taekwondo is since the year 2000, just like Judo, recognized as an Olympic Sport. These two martial arts are unique within the world of martial arts/budo sports. Besides wearing a Taekwondo suit, use of gloves, shin guards, a head guard and a body protector is mandatory.
