KUNG FU

Kung Fu is originally a Chinese martial art. Often, Kung Fu will be used as a synonym for Wushu, even though Wushu is a collective term for several different martial arts.

Loosely translated, Kung Fu means ‘dedication’ or ‘great concentration’.

Kung Fu is a term for many different styles of the Chinese martial arts, that mainly focus on the self-defense both armed and unarmed. Because it is a collective term, many underlying forms and styles have been developed, some of these are: Dim Mak, Weng Chun, Wing Chun and many more.

Even though the Chinese martial arts are incredibly old, the Shaolin Temple has often times (falsely) been used as the ‘place of origin’ of the sport. The Shaolin Temple has undoubtedly played a big part in the developing and the spreading of Kung Fu, but it is not the place of origin.

Partially because of the many movies with stars like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li, Kung Fu has gained in popularity. Unfortunately this sometimes also caused some mis-information.

The many different forms and styles of Kung Fu also contributed to the uncertainties as to what precisely Kung Fu is.
